What to Do When You’re Tap Water Turns Brown

Almost everyone use tap water. Even if you are not using it today you might have to use it some other time. It is therefore very important to know what can cause the tap water to become brown. You are in a better position to fix a problem if you know what actually caused the problem. You should be equipped with information. If the water is brown, there is a possibility that that water is unsafe to drink. If your tap water is discolored, there is a probability that water is not safe for consumption. It is therefore advisable not to use the water even for bathing as it might not be safe for your skin.

If your water is brown, there are several things that could have happened. If there is a construction going on in the neighborhood, there is a chance it could be the reason. If that is the case, there is no need to worry because the water only looks bad but it is mostly safe. Prevention is better that cure, call the local water department and verify whether the dirt is merely caused by the disturbance. Mostly they will notify you if there will be something to expect in your water.

Another cause can be that the community has newly changed the source water. If that is the case, and even the taste of that water changes, test it. When the results of the test looks bad then it is in your best interest to find another way because lead poisoning is not something to joke about. Water is a basic need, it should be very safe.

Brown water is also caused by minerals such as iron and manganese. The only way to know for sure is to test the water. If iron and manganese are the ones that are causing your water to be brown, it means that there is no need to worry. The minerals are actually nutritious. High amount of minerals such as magnesium and calcium however causes the water to become hard. The hard water makes the water hard to use. If you are having a problem with hard water, go get a water softener and it will not be a problem anymore. It will save you lots of resources.

All metals rust. Rust contaminates your water when it finds its way into your water. They also make the pipes lifespan shorter. Rusty pipes are a beginning of a bigger expense if not taken care of. when this happens to you, just replace your pipes with copper. The best way however, is to use something that will fix most of your problems. Water softener makes sure that you get the most life out of your pipes and water. If your water is brown, don’t panic, just identify the problem and fix it.
